Engaging Youth in Engineering (EYE Program)

In March, Structural Engineer Elizabeth Hamby and Mechanical Engineer Kayla Bray volunteered with 6th grade math and science students at Burns Middle School. In class, students learn about a problem and are given a design challenge to solve that problem and test the technology. The project was Don't Go With the Flow. Students learned about watersheds and problems caused by sediment washing into streams and being carried to a larger body of water. Then they learn how to calculate sediment discharge rate. They use that information to design and test a barrier system for a model streambed.  CLICK HERE for pictures.
